About
On an isolated shoulder above the arid heart of the continent, Broome’s tropical climate and diverse community have created a visually striking environment.
How the town exists in this time and place — the universal and the local; the familiar and the forgotten — is what Western Australian painter James MacNeil explores in his work.
Born in 1984, MacNeil grew up in the misty hills and valleys of Bridgetown in the state’s South West. Graduating with a BA Visual Arts from Edith Cowan University in 2004, he painted the suburbs of Perth before moving to Yawuru country in 2011.
Inspired by artists who’ve spent their lives documenting their environments, MacNeil hopes to continue his life’s practice in his favourite corner of the world.
